In this retreat, Matthew Wright introduces us to Julian of Norwich, the 14th-century anchoress whose voice continues to speak with profound relevance. Living through pandemics and enduring both physical suffering and ecstatic revelations, Julian articulated a vision of divine love that is anything but naïve. Her writings wrestle with the deepest questions of creation, the human soul, sin, salvation, and why suffering exists in a world created by an all-loving God. Matthew guides participants through Julian’s teachings with clarity and warmth, highlighting her parable of the master and servant, her vision of the flowing blood of Christ, and her revolutionary understanding of the Divine as Mother. He shows how Julian’s assurance that “all shall be well” emerges not from optimism, but from a contemplative knowing born of her radical trust in God’s love. As this is a LIVE recording you may notice some audio variability and background noise. Matthew Wright is an Episcopal priest, retreat leader, and teacher of the Christian Wisdom tradition. He serves at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church in Woodstock, NY, and is a visiting teacher for The Contemplative Society and other contemplative networks. He is also a student of the Mevlevi Sufi path and is known for weaving Christian and interspiritual streams of wisdom into a living contemplative path for today.
