In Cynthia’s words, this recorded retreat gives “a broad retrospection of the journey [of The Contemplative Society Wisdom School] over the past 20 years and what percolate as some of the core tools in our toolkit as we move into doing wisdom work in the next generation.” She hones in on the sometimes subtle yet significantly distinctive characteristics of the Christian wisdom lineage that has emerged under her tutelage. These characteristics are delineated in eight key elements that she sees as the heart of this lineage. In expanding on each of these elements, she covers topics ranging from spiritual practices, to consciousness maps, to historical and evolutionary perspectives, to pluralistic versus integral approaches that foster “permeably boundaried selfhood.”
Cynthia emphasizes that she offers these eight elements as “retrospective guidelines” and not as commandments cast in stone. They are to provide an underlying current for navigating the continuing creative unfolding of the lineage. Encouraging on-going dialogue around these guidelines, Cynthia responds to probing questions and comments by both relatively new and long-standing participants in the Wisdom School retreats. She also teaches several chants for embodying some of the sacred knowings.
This recording serves not only as a basis for ongoing conversation, but also as an archival record of The Contemplative Society Wisdom School to date.
