August 2024 Newsletter content

August Greetings from The Contemplative Society!

We wanted to get this newsletter to you early in the month so that you still have time to register for our upcoming September 2024 retreat with Heather Ruce.   Please note that the registration deadline is August 31 and we are also organizing a rideshare program so if you have space in your car to offer someone a ride OR you need a ride, please send a note to: ADMIN (AT) CONTEMPLATIVE.ORG.  Further information on TCS’s Sorrento Centre retreat can be found below along with news about an exciting new on-line offering by Mary-Clare Carder and another in-person event in November with retreat leaders Henri Lock and Leslie Black.

This month we also want to say a special thanks to those in our community who responded to the recent Legacy Giving survey in May/June.  We will be following up with a more formal program in the coming months but please be in touch if you have any questions in the meantime.

So again, Summer Blessings to you and we look forward to seeing you in Sorrento in September!

“Workshop on Contemplative Practices and Spirituality: with Mary-Clare Carder (Facilitator)”

Four Session Workshop Via Zoom

Wednesdays:  October 2nd, 9th, 16th, and 23rd, 2024

From 7-8:30 pm PT

This 4-part workshop is designed for people of all ages who are new to the contemplative path and wish to learn more, or simply want a refresher in contemplative practices, or would like to spend time with others on the contemplative path. All are welcome.

The workshop fee is $80 and “paying from the heart” (paying whatever you can) is welcome.

Workshop dates are the first four Wednesdays of October, these being: October 02nd,09th, 16th, and 23rd, 2024. Workshop times are: 7- 8:30 pm PT. The workshop will be recorded and a link sent if requested to those for whom this is an inconvenient time.

This Zoom-offered workshop will be held in four, 1½ hour sessions. About mid-way through each session there will be a 10-minute break for personal care and refreshing.

Session 1 will offer an introduction to the contemplative path and the practices of centering prayer, chanting, and lectio divina will be taught/shared. Session 2 will explore the heart working in concert, and practices of inner awareness, including an embodiment practice. Session 3 will offer a short discussion on consciousness and the use of contemplative practices to bring a deeper connection to our consciousness. Session 4 will offer a discussion of unitive or non-dual consciousness, and the fascinating but little known Gospel of Thomas, which is a favourite resource of contemplatives. All sessions will give a taste of different facets of contemplative spirituality.

Mary Clare Carder has been a student of Cynthia Bourgeault’s for 30 years and a member of The Contemplative Society since 1998. She was on the Board of The Contemplative Society for over 5 years. She has led workshops on contemplative practices, and contemplative quiet days. In 2020 she published Pool of Wisdom: A Spiritual Autobiography.

Immerse yourself in the inner world.

Fee: $80 or “pay from the heart” (i.e. whatever you can).

TCS is a non-profit charitable organisation run by a volunteer board and a dedicated circle of contemplatives. It was formed in Victoria, BC, Canada in 1997 to serve an emerging contemplative renewal, and to support and spread the teachings of Cynthia Bourgeault and other distinguished Wisdom teachers. We lovingly carry forward this work, adapting to the changing needs of the present and future, while anchoring ourselves in the ancient Wisdom tradition.

We would love for you to join us as a member and to help sustain and build our offerings with a donation of any amount.
